If your TPMS light won’t turn off after you’ve checked your tyre pressure, you usually need to manually reset the system through your car’s menu, hold a reset button for 3-5 seconds, or drive at 50mph for 10 minutes to let it recalibrate. The exact method depends on your car’s make and model.

You’ve topped up the tyres. The pressure’s fine now. But that orange horseshoe symbol is still glowing on your dashboard. That’s annoying, and it usually just means the system hasn’t caught up with the new pressure yet.

What TPMS Actually Is

TPMS stands for Tyre Pressure Monitoring System. Every new car sold in the UK and EU since November 2014 has been legally required to have one fitted, under EU Regulation 661/2009.

There are two types. Direct TPMS uses a sensor inside each wheel to measure actual pressure. Indirect TPMS uses your car’s ABS sensors to detect when a wheel is spinning faster than the others, which usually means it’s under-inflated.

This matters for resetting, because the two systems behave differently.

Direct TPMS: Why It Often Needs a Manual Reset

If your car has direct TPMS, each wheel sensor sends a live pressure reading to the car’s computer, so the light won’t clear until the system re-reads the correct pressure.

This is common on BMW, Audi, Mercedes, and most cars built after 2015. Simply adding air isn’t always enough. You often need to trigger the reset manually through the infotainment menu or a physical button.

Indirect TPMS: Usually Resets Itself While Driving

Indirect systems are simpler. They don’t have physical sensors in the wheels, so they typically recalibrate automatically once you drive for 10-15 minutes at a steady 50mph or above.

This is common on older Fords, Vauxhalls, and some SEAT models. If your car uses this system, you often don’t need to do anything except drive normally after correcting the pressure.

How to Reset TPMS by Make

Ford

Turn the ignition to position II (don’t start the engine). Press the TPMS reset button, usually located under the steering wheel, until the light flashes three times. Start the engine and drive for a few minutes to confirm.

Vauxhall

Go to the vehicle settings menu on the dashboard display. Select “Tyre Pressure,” then “Set New Reference Pressure.” Confirm and drive for 10-15 minutes.

BMW

Go to iDrive, select “Car,” then “Tyre & Vehicle.” Choose “RPA reset” or “Reset Tyre Pressure Monitor” and confirm. Drive above 25mph for a few minutes to complete calibration.

Audi

Open the MMI system, go to “Car” then “Tyre Pressure Monitoring.” Select “Store current tyre pressures” and confirm. This works even after checking pressures cold.

Volkswagen

Press the “Settings” button on the touchscreen, go to “Car,” then “Tyre Monitor.” Select “Basic Setting” or “Calibrate” and hold until confirmed.

Mercedes-Benz

Use the steering wheel controls to open the vehicle menu. Go to “Service,” then “Tyre Pressure,” and select “Confirm Tyre Pressure.” Newer models may require pressing and holding a physical button on the dash.

Toyota and Lexus

Find the TPMS reset button, usually below the steering wheel. Turn the ignition on without starting the engine, press and hold the button until the light blinks twice, then start the car.

Common Reasons the Light Won’t Clear

You checked the pressure cold, but the system read it warm (or vice versa)

Tyre pressure changes as the tyre heats up from driving. Always check pressure when tyres are cold, ideally before driving more than a mile, for an accurate reading.

One sensor has a dead battery

TPMS sensor batteries typically last 5-10 years and aren’t usually replaceable on their own. If one sensor consistently fails to report, the whole sensor unit usually needs replacing, which costs roughly £40-£80 per wheel including fitting.

A tyre has been changed or swapped without re-syncing

If a garage rotates your tyres or fits new ones, the sensors sometimes need to be re-paired to the car’s system. This is a quick job most tyre fitters include for free if you ask.

The spare tyre is under-inflated

Some vehicles monitor the spare too. If it’s part of your TPMS setup and it’s low, the light can stay on even if all four road tyres are correct.

Yes. Since 2014, a malfunctioning TPMS warning light is a reason for MOT failure in the UK, not just an advisory. If the light stays on after a proper reset and pressure check, get it inspected before your test date rather than risking a fail.

When to See a Garage Instead of Resetting It Yourself

If you’ve corrected the pressure, tried the reset procedure for your model, and the light still won’t clear after a short drive, the issue is likely a faulty sensor, a dead sensor battery, or a wiring fault rather than something a reset can solve. Most tyre fitters and garages can diagnose this in under 15 minutes using a TPMS scan tool.
