If your car pulls slightly to one side, the steering feels a bit heavier than usual, or your TPMS light comes on intermittently, you likely have a slow puncture. Unlike a sudden flat, a slow puncture leaks air gradually over days or weeks, which makes the early signs easy to miss.

You haven’t hit anything obvious. There’s no visible flat tyre sitting in your driveway. But something feels slightly off about how the car handles, and you’re right to take that seriously.

Here are the real symptoms to check for, what causes a slow puncture in the first place, and how to confirm it before it turns into a full flat.

1. The Car Pulls to One Side

A tyre that’s losing pressure creates more rolling resistance on that side, which can make the steering wheel drift toward the affected wheel, especially at higher speeds.

This is often the first sign drivers notice, usually on the motorway rather than around town. If the pulling gets worse over a few days rather than staying constant, that points toward a slow leak rather than an alignment issue.

2. The TPMS Light Comes On, Then Sometimes Goes Off Again

Most modern cars have a Tyre Pressure Monitoring System that triggers a dashboard light once pressure drops below a set threshold. With a slow puncture, this light can flicker on and off over several days as the pressure crosses that threshold back and forth with temperature changes.

Don’t ignore it just because it clears itself. A light that keeps returning, even briefly, usually means the tyre is genuinely losing air, not just reacting to cold weather.

3. The Tyre Looks Slightly Under-Inflated, But Not Flat

Walk around your car every few days and actually look at the tyres side by side. A tyre with a slow puncture often looks marginally flatter at the base than the others, even though it’s still clearly holding most of its air.

This is easy to miss if you only glance at your tyres occasionally. Comparing them against each other, rather than looking at just one, makes the difference more obvious.

4. You’re Topping Up Air More Often Than Normal

If you find yourself adding air to the same tyre every couple of weeks, when the others hold their pressure for months, that tyre almost certainly has a slow leak.

Tyres do lose a small amount of pressure naturally over time, roughly 1-2 PSI per month. Needing a top-up far more frequently than that on one specific tyre is a clear signal something’s actively leaking.

5. Increased Road Noise or a Slight Vibration

A significantly under-inflated tyre changes its contact shape with the road, which can create a subtle humming noise or a faint vibration through the steering wheel, particularly at motorway speeds.

This symptom is easy to dismiss as road surface noise. If it’s isolated to certain speeds and doesn’t match the road conditions, it’s worth checking your tyre pressures rather than assuming it’s the road.

6. Reduced Fuel Efficiency

Under-inflated tyres create more rolling resistance, which makes the engine work harder to maintain speed. A tyre running significantly low on pressure can measurably reduce fuel economy, even if the difference isn’t dramatic enough to notice immediately.

If you track your fuel usage and you’ve noticed it creeping up without an obvious explanation, a slow puncture is worth ruling out.

7. Uneven Tread Wear Developing Over Time

A tyre that’s been running under-inflated for weeks or months wears unevenly, typically showing more wear on the outer edges of the tread compared to the centre.

This symptom takes longer to appear than the others, but it’s one of the clearest signs once you know what to look for. If you notice this pattern, get the puncture found and fixed before the uneven wear gets worse.

What Causes a Slow Puncture?

Slow punctures don’t always come from an obvious nail in the tread. Common causes include:

  • A small screw or nail still embedded in the tyre, partially sealing its own hole
  • A cracked or corroded valve stem, leaking air gradually rather than all at once
  • A poorly seated bead where the tyre meets the wheel rim
  • A faulty seal around the TPMS sensor inside the wheel
  • A tiny puncture from road debris too small to see without close inspection

How to Confirm a Slow Puncture Yourself

Before booking a garage visit, you can usually narrow it down at home.

Check the pressure with a gauge, then check it again in 24 hours without adding any air. A drop of more than 2-3 PSI in that time confirms a real leak, not just normal seasonal variation.

Spray soapy water around the valve stem, tread, and rim edge, then look for bubbles. Bubbles show exactly where the air is escaping.

When to Get It Looked At

If you’ve confirmed a genuine pressure drop and can’t find the leak yourself, get it checked before driving any real distance. A slow puncture that goes unaddressed can worsen suddenly, especially at motorway speeds where heat builds up faster in an under-inflated tyre. Most tyre fitters can find and repair a slow puncture in under 30 minutes if it’s caught early.
